A new species of Baurusuchus (Crocodyliformes, Mesoeucrocodylia) from the Upper Cretaceous of Brazil, with the first complete postcranial skeleton described for the family Baurusuchidae Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Nascimento,Paulo Miranda; Zaher,Hussam.
The present work describes a new species of Baurusuchidae from Upper Cretaceous sediments of the Bauru Basin, and provides the first complete postcranial description for the family. Many postcranial features observed in the new species are also present in other notosuchian taxa, and are thus considered plesiomorphic for the genus. These are: long cervical neural spines; robust deltopectoral crest of the humerus; large proximal portion in the radiale that contacts the ulna; ulnare anterior distal projection; supra-acetabular crest well developed laterally; post-acetabular process posterodorsally deflected; presence of an anteromedial crest in the femur; fourth trocanter of femur posteriorly positioned; tibia with a laterally curved shaft; calcaneum tuber...

Herpetofauna of Paranapiacaba: expanding our knowledge on a historical region in the Atlantic forest of southeastern Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Trevine,Vivian; Forlani,Maurício C.; Haddad,Célio F. B.; Zaher,Hussam.
The largest area of preserved Atlantic forest is located in the southern portion of Brazil. The region of Paranapiacaba is depicted in Brazilian zoological studies as one of the first and most intensely sampled areas of the state of São Paulo. We provide a concise list of reptiles and amphibians from the Paranapiacaba Municipal Park. It represents the first comprehensive survey of the group in the area. We recorded 136 species of reptiles and amphibians from field surveys, museum collections and the literature. The anuran diversity of Paranapiacaba is greater than that of Estação Ecológica de Boracéia, which has been considered the most distinctive areas in São Paulo in terms of amphibian diversity. The rich history of herpetological research in the region,...

Molecular phylogeny of advanced snakes (Serpentes, Caenophidia) with an emphasis on South American Xenodontines: a revised classification and descriptions of new taxa Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Zaher,Hussam; Grazziotin,Felipe Gobbi; Cadle,John E.; Murphy,Robert W.; Moura-Leite,Julio Cesar de; Bonatto,Sandro L..
We present a molecular phylogenetic analysis of caenophidian (advanced) snakes using sequences from two mitochondrial genes (12S and 16S rRNA) and one nuclear (c-mos) gene (1681 total base pairs), and with 131 terminal taxa sampled from throughout all major caenophidian lineages but focussing on Neotropical xenodontines. Direct optimization parsimony analysis resulted in a well-resolved phylogenetic tree, which corroborates some clades identified in previous analyses and suggests new hypotheses for the composition and relationships of others. The major salient points of our analysis are: (1) placement of Acrochordus, Xenodermatids, and Pareatids as successive outgroups to all remaining caenophidians (including viperids, elapids, atractaspidids, and all...

Natural history of Micrablepharus maximiliani (Squamata: Gymnophthalmidae) in a Cerrado region of northeastern Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Dal Vechio,Francisco; Recoder,Renato; Zaher,Hussam; Rodrigues,Miguel Trefaut.
Micrablepharus maximiliani (Reinhardt & Luetken, 1861) is a microteiid lizard widely distributed in the open areas of South America. Little is known about its ecology and reproductive biology. Here, we analyzed aspects of the natural history of a population of M. maximiliani from a Cerrado area in the state of Piauí, northeastern Brazil. Our results suggest that the reproductive activity of M. maximiliani might be seasonal in the Cerrado, since reproductive females were observed only in the dry season, whereas reproductive males were present in both seasons. Vitellogenic follicles and oviductal eggs were found simultaneously in one female, suggesting that females may produce more than one clutch per season. Sexual dimorphism was observed in body...

Phylogenetic relationships of the genus Sibynophis (Serpentes: Colubroidea) Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Zaher,Hussam; Grazziotin,Felipe G.; Graboski,Roberta; Fuentes,Ricardo G.; Sánchez-Martinez,Paola; Montingelli,Giovanna G.; Zhang,Ya-Ping; Murphy,Robert W..
We present the results of the first molecular analysis of the phylogenetic affinities of the Asian colubroid genus Sibynophis. We recovered a sister-group relationship between Sibynophis and the New World Scaphiodontophis. Although Liophidium sometimes is associated with these genera, the relationship is distant. Morphological characters that Liophidium shares with Sibynophis and Scaphiodontophis are resolved as homoplasies that probably reflect the similarities of their specialized feeding habits. The traditional subfamily Sibynophiinae is elevated to the family-level, and Scaphiodontophiinae is placed in its synonymy.

Pitfalls of artificial grouping and stratification of scientific journals based on their Impact Factor: a case study in Brazilian Zoology Rev. Bras. Zool.
Machado,Fábio A.; Zaher,Hussam.
The present contribution explores the impact of the QUALIS metric system for academic evaluation implemented by CAPES (Coordination for the Development of Personnel in Higher Education) upon Brazilian Zoological research. The QUALIS system is based on the grouping and ranking of scientific journals according to their Impact Factor (IF). We examined two main points implied by this system, namely: 1) its reliability as a guideline for authors; 2) if Zoology possesses the same publication profile as Botany and Oceanography, three fields of knowledge grouped by CAPES under the subarea "BOZ" for purposes of evaluation. Additionally, we tested CAPES' recent suggestion that the area of Ecology would represent a fourth field of research compatible with the former...

Redescription of Atractus albuquerquei (Serpentes: Colubridae: Dipsadinae), with comments on geographical distribution and intraspecific variation Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Zaher,Hussam; Souza,Ivan; Gower,David J.; Hingst-Zaher,Erika; Silva Jr,Nelson Jorge da.
Atractus albuquerquei Cunha and Nascimento, 1983 was previously known from a holotype from eastern Pará, and 15 specimens from Rondônia and Acre, all in Brazil. We report on 23 additional specimens from the Brazilian states of Rondônia, Goiás, Mato Grosso, and Mato Grosso do Sul. These specimens extend the known range of A. albuquerquei substantially, and beyond the southern limits of the Amazon basin. The holotype of A. albuquerquei is redescribed and intraspecific variation in external morphology, hemipenes, and colour is documented. Sexual dimorphism exists in total length, and number of ventral (significantly greater in females) and subcaudal scales (greater in males). There is a significant correlation between number of subcaudal scales and longitude...

Taxonomic identification of the Megaloolithid egg and eggshells from the Cretaceous Bauru Basin (Minas Gerais, Brazil): comparison with the Auca Mahuevo (Argentina) titanosaurid eggs Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Grellet-Tinner,Gerald; Zaher,Hussam.
The taxonomically (titanosaurid) identified eggs and eggshells of Auca Mahuevo (Patagonia, Argentina) provide an opportunity to compare and identify orphan megaloolithid eggs found elsewhere. Previous investigation determined that the oological material from Neuquén (Megaloolithus patagonicus) and Peru (M. pseudomamillare) are related to titanosaurid dinosaurs. Examination of an egg and several (megaloolithid) eggshell fragments from the Upper Cretaceous Marilia Formation strongly suggests, as oological characters are at least genus specific, that the same group of titanosaur dinosaurs, which lived in the Neuquén Basin during the Late Campanian, were also present and reproducing in the Cretaceous Bauru Basin (Brazil). Furthermore, it has been suggested...

The herpetofauna of Parque Nacional da Serra das Confusões, state of Piauí, Brazil, with a regional species list from an ecotonal area of Cerrado and Caatinga Biota Neotropica
Dal Vechio,Francisco; Teixeira Jr.,Mauro; Recoder,Renato Sousa; Rodrigues,Miguel Trefault; Zaher,Hussam.
Abstract Different physiognomies at Parque Nacional da Serra das Confusões (PNSCo) were intensively sampled aiming to access the distribution pattern of its herpetofauna. Sixty six species were found in the park (47 reptiles and 19 amphibians); the rarefaction curve for lizards, although not fully stabilized in an asymptote, indicates that the sampling effort was enough to reveal most lizard species occurring in the area; and richness estimators recovered values close to observed. For amphibians, the curve shows a weak tendency to stabilization with richness estimators indicating that additional records could be done. Field work carried out at PNSCo has highlighted an unique herpetofauna: five new species were described and there are three candidates as...

The herpetofauna of the Estação Ecológica de Uruçuí-Una, state of Piauí, Brazil Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Dal Vechio,Francisco; Recoder,Renato; Rodrigues,Miguel Trefaut; Zaher,Hussam.
This work was carried out with the main objective of sampling the herpetofauna of a Cerrado site in the state of Piauí, Brazil, that is influenced by neighboring biomes and one of the least known regions of the domain. The herpetofauna of the different habitats present at Estação Ecológica de Uruçuí-Una (EEUU) was sampled intensively during three campaigns (two during the wet season and one during the dry season). We recorded 90 species, 64 reptiles and 26 anurans, a high local richness when compared to other well-sampled localities of the Cerrado. The rarefaction curve for both anurans and lizards shows that the observed richness is close to real and the richness estimators indicate that undetected species should be added with higher sampling effort....
